How it works
Describe the game you can't name: what you did in it, what it looked like, when and on what you played it. We check the description against 300,000+ games from Steam and IGDB, including console, handheld, flash and mobile games that never came to Steam.
A language model reads your description and lists the games it thinks you mean. We check every guess against our catalogue of 300,000+ games (the whole Steam store plus IGDB, which covers consoles, handhelds, arcades, flash and mobile), so each result is a real game with a year and platforms. We also search the catalogue's game descriptions for rare details from your text, to catch games the model doesn't know.
The model then ranks that shortlist and says which of your details each game matches. It sees only what our catalogue says about each game plus what it knows for sure, and it is told to say nothing rather than guess.
On 114 real r/tipofmyjoystick posts with a known answer, the right game came first 25% of the time and made the top ten 39% of the time. Treat the list as candidates, not a verdict, and use the buttons under the results to narrow it down.
Questions
What if my game isn't in the results?
Add a detail you haven't mentioned yet: a character, a level, a menu screen, the box art, a sound. Or pick the platform and decade under the results. A few games, mostly obscure flash and educational ones, aren't in any database we can search.
Do you keep what I type?
No. Your description goes to the language model to answer the search and isn't stored. We keep the answer for a week under a fingerprint of the text, so the same question gets an instant reply, and we count clicks on "That's it!" and "Not it" (without the text) to see how often the tool works.
Which games can it find?
Anything in the Steam store or in IGDB: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Sega consoles, handhelds, arcade machines, flash and browser games, and mobile games. Games that are on Steam link to their page here, where you'll also find similar games.
